Strengthening Opportunities
for Achieving Reentry (SOAR)
Youth leaving the Travis County juvenile justice system face a variety of challenges as they reintegrate into their schools, families, and home communities.
That’s where SOAR steps in for support.
About SOAR
SOAR is a comprehensive reentry court program operated by the Travis County Juvenile Probation Department and Juvenile Court. SOAR believes strengthening family and community connections is the key to a safe and successful transition.
SOAR reflects a balanced and restorative justice approach and is designed to protect the community, hold youth accountable for their actions, recognize the interest of victims, develop youth competencies, and reduce recidivism.
How Does SOAR Work?
Continuum of Care
Upon admission, each youth is assigned a juvenile probation officer, counselor, and care coordinator – known as the Support Team. This multidisciplinary team supports the youth and family through the completion of placement and community reentry and reintegration. Additionally, parents have access to a Family Partner who serves as a peer support and parent coach as the parent prepares for the youth’s return to their care.
Motivational Tools
Positive reinforcement is an evidence-based tool used to motivate and support positive behavior changes in adolescents. SOAR offers a variety of motivational tools, such as incentives, rewards, and a youth-centric workbook, to encourage engagement throughout the reentry process. As youth achieve their goals, they can earn gift cards, tuition, and more.
Strengths-based Court
SOAR Reentry Court is designed to meet youth and families where they are by building on their strengths, talents, and interests. During hearings, the Court reviews progress, problem-solves with the team, and provides encouragement to youth as they focus on achieving their treatment and reentry goals.
